A memorable trip to the wettest place on Earth - Mawsynram

Mawsynram is the wettest place on earth, it falls in Meghalaya, the North Eastern State of India. The village is 60 kilometers away from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. I am kind of proud of myself to have visited this place on a rented scooter. If you are also interested in learning more about it, do read this post in full.

Scooter Ride to Mawsynram From Shillong

The distance of Mawsynram from Shillong is roughly 60 kilometers. One can go there in several ways, you can get a taxi from Shillong or get a bus ride(I couldn't find one though) or hire a scooter or bike.  I hired a scooter from the Police Bazar Market, see the below video where I have given the directions:

In the above video, you will learn everything you need to know about Mawsynram if you prefer to consume video content over text. Anyone who is looking to visit the wettest place on earth, the above video is the best for you.

How I reached Mawsynram from Amritsar Punjab

I started my journey from Amritsar in the second week of March 2025, and I had various destinations planned. My first halt was Delhi, as the train I boarded, Vande Bharat has its final stop at Delhi. From there I had a flight for Guwahati, I was gong there to meet a friend of mine who had come from the USA.

I reach Guwahati the same day, and spend a night with the friend. From there I went to the hometown of my friend, Lumding, Assaam. After spending a few days with this friend, I came back to Guwahati for my onward Journey to Meghayala.

From Guwahati Railway station, I took a sharing taxi to Shillong, costs ₹500/person. I reached Shillong in a couple of hours and took another taxi to reach Cherrapunji, the second most wettest place on earth where I spent two days(Will explain in another blog post).

From Cherrapunji, you can not find a ride for Mawsynram, unless you are super rich to afford a private taxi. So, I had to head back to Shillong. After getting there, I could not find a sharing taxi. Then after a few minutes, I saw a Sardar taxi boy, I asked him for suggestion, kind enough, knowing I am also a punjabi guy, he suggested me to hire a bike or scooty! And that was it!

I went straight to the bike rental shop.

Scooter/Bike Rental in Shillong(Price, Timing)

Renting a scooter or a bike in Shillong is very easy. You just need to deposit your Driving License and the advance payment of ₹800 and the vehicle is yours for 24 hours!

The best part is, you can take the scooter anywhere and just keep paying ₹800 every 24 hours unlike other places where you can not ride beyond a certain distance and the return time is only 12 hrs. I personally know that about Manali, where I had to return the scooter at night to avoid night charges.

So, the process of scooter rental was super smooth. You just need to make sure that you make a video of the scooter in front of the rental shop guys before starting your journey, just so there are no issues while returning the vehicle.

Helmets are very important in Shillong, and the rental companies offer them to you for free along with the vehicle.

The whole process of renting the scooter lasted only a few minutes, and I was ready to start my Journey the very next moment.

The Scenes On The Journey From Shillong to Mawsynram are Stunning!

If you are looking for a best road experience for a Journey on your scooter or bike, Shillong to Mawsynram should be at the top of your list. As scenes you come across on the road are absolutly beautiful. Right from the weather to dense jungle, green moutains and people, everything is so beautiful.

The roads were surprisingly clean and had no potholes! I was stopping at every other place on the road that looked amazing. The Journey which should have been completed in two hours took me to complete in nearly hours.

The mesperizing beauty of the journey really made me believe in the saying, "The Journey is more beautiful than the desination".

I did this Journey i the second week of March 2025, and the Rainy season starts in the Month of April. Even then, there were cloud and light showers that had just stopped before me reaching the wettest place on earth.

I highly recommend that you watch my video and experience what I experienced on the Journey.

And, if you have any quetsions, please feel free to ask me.

Cheers.
